Löbau: City. Country. Living together
Löbau: Stadt. Land. Zusammenleben

Löbau - that is the City on the Hill, Trade Fair & Exhibition Park, the Schminke House, but also 800 years of urban life in Upper Lusatia.

The permanent exhibition "Löbau: City. Country. Living Together" shows the path the city has taken. Discover artefacts from a Bronze Age rampart, the development of an industrial town from a small medieval town, pumas and musketeers in Löbau, Löbauer Berg as the No. 1 excursion destination and a glass goblet as the most important testimony to the cohesion of the towns of Upper Lusatia.

The exhibition will be realised in two parts. The first part will open in the anniversary year 2021.

We invite you to tell us during your visit which themes you would like to see in the exhibitions in the future.

"Craft guilds in Löbau"
"Zünftiges Löbau"

The permanent exhibition on the history of the town is currently being revised. However, access to the permanent exhibition "Zünftiges Löbau" remains valid. The exhibition provides an insight into the history of of urban crafts with old tools and strange-looking goods. The exhibition presents professions that have been created over the centuries and today seem completely unknown. But it is also possible to discover products and devices already in use several decades ago. In which newspaper could you find out about current fashion in the past? How can you recognise different herbs by their smell and what do different types of wood look like? Tailor, pharmacist and carpenter are only three of the professions that can be experienced in detail.

Unfortunately, we are not currently showing any special exhibitions. Please feel free to visit our permanent exhibitions "Löbau: City. Country. Living together"
("Löbau: Stadt. Land. Zusammenleben") and "Craft guilds in Löbau" ("Zünftiges Löbau").

We will be happy to inform you about new special exhibitions here again in the future.

Arrival at the Anchor Cultural Property
Ankommen im Anker Kulturgut

SPECIAL EXHIBITION HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO 29.08.2021

As part of a student project, the architecture students set out to answer the question of what the future of the site might look like when a city museum is located here. The students then designed an arrival point between the factory building and the neighbouring Schminke House: a visitor centre. The solutions of the budding architects differ from each other, but have one thing in common: The Noodle Factory, which has shaped the history of Löbau, will in future become an anchor of the town's past by being used as a museum. Here visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the 118-year history of the pasta factory and the 800-year history of the city of Löbau. Models and plans illustrate the visions of the "Anker Kulturgut".

"Fest verANKERt. The Löbau Noodle Factory and its Team”
"Fest verANKERt. Die Löbauer Nudelfabrik und ihre Mannschaft"
(5th May 2020 - 29th November 2020)

The Äußere Bautzner Straße in Löbau is highlighted by the facade of the former "Loeser & Richter" factory. The alternation of plastered and unplastered parts of the building seems to be mixed here. The lack of uniformity is evidence of the turbulent history of pasta production in Löbau. The pasta was produced here under the brand name "Anker" for 118 years and thus survived the times of war and peace, political changes and the short time of German reunification.

The special exhibition "Fest verANKERt. The Löbau Noodle Factory and its Team" gives an insight into factory construction and everyday working life between 1874 and 1992, revealing architectural highlights, effective advertising strategies, proven production techniques, a strong sense of community and serious cutbacks. Numerous photographs, original equipment and documents from the Schminke Family Estate lead through the significant history of Löbau, which has left its mark on the urban landscape until today.

The exhibition was created with the support of Teigwaren Riesa GmbH. In the future, the former Anker Noodle Factory is to be permanently available as a cultural and meeting centre.

If you have worked for VEB Anker or Lehrbauhof Löbau yourself, know someone or have photos or documents of those times, please contact Stadtarchiv Löbau. We would like to work with you on the history of the factory.

No pain, no gain. Architect Theobald Hofmann from Löbau
Ohne Fleiß kein Preis. Der Architekt Theobald Hofmann aus Löbau
(26th June 2019 - 5th January 2020)

Significant personalities of yesterday are sometimes forgotten today. But the City Museum in Löbau, through a special exhibition, has restored the memory of a former regional celebrity: Theobald Hofmann. The architect was born in Löbau in 1861 and died in Kassel in 1953. In 1941 he donated part of his artistic work to his hometown, and since 1946 the street in the north of Löbau has been named after him.

The name Theobald Hofmann was well known to his peers. His practice and studies took him from Löbau to Zittau, through Leipzig to Vienna and Budapest, Dresden and finally to Italy and Greece. Ancient temples and buildings of the Italian Renaissance became his hobby. Until his old age, Hofmann was a renowned art historian, researcher and publicist. Theobald Hofmann admired Gottfried Semper and his works in the Neo-Renaissance style. These became the model for his own designs. Already during his work as a teacher at construction schools in Königsberg and Wuppertal he continued to design residential houses and representative public buildings. A special exhibition shows selected works from his generous donation. It presents a picture of a man who was thirsty for knowledge, ready to travel and always connected with his homeland. Paintings, drawings, prints, manuscripts and photographs made it possible to get to know the man from Löbau, whose traces can still be found in Löbau today.

Löbau - treasures of paper, wood and parchment
Löbauer Schätze aus Papier, Holz und Pergament
(4th December 2018 - 10th May 2019)

Why are the hidden, "ancient" fragments found in 500-year-old books interesting? What does hitting have to do with opening a book? And how can one read a magazine from past centuries today? These are just a few of the many questions that can be answered after a visit to the new special exhibition of the City Museum 'Löbauer Schätze aus Papier, Holz und Pargament'. Whether in libraries, bookstores or the online e-book library, books are now available everywhere and for everyone. More than 500 years ago, this was not a matter of course, not many people could read and write, books were mostly unaffordable and incredibly precious. Löbau has preserved treasures of paper, wood and parchment from these and earlier times. These treasures are now a special exhibition in the Löbau City Museum. With this exposition, the reopening of the institution will take place on 4 December 2018. The museum's team, which is gathered around Director Corinna Wandt, together with the Löbau-based graphic designer and artist Steffen Rimp, managed to process treasures on topics such as "Book elements in the late Middle Ages" and "The Development of Writing" within a few weeks. Visitors to the exhibition will encounter important topics in the history of the city and will be able to immerse themselves in the world of the Six Towns League, the Reformation in Löbau and the work of Karl Benjamin Preusker.
