About us

The beginnings of the Löbau collection go back to Karl Benjamin Preusker (1786 - 1871). The Löbau-born Rentamtmeister (head of the tax office) from Großenhain was the founder of the first public library in Germany, a representative of the popular education movement and the father of Saxon archaeology. He proposed the foundation of a museum in Loebau and donated part of his archaeological collection to the town council library. However, the museum was not founded by the town council until 1894 and was preceded by a citizens' initiative which organised an exhibition in the town hall. Under the leadership of the honorary museum committee, Julius Sandt, public interest grew, as did the willingness of citizens to make donations, so that the museum was permanently housed in the City Hall. When the available space soon proved insufficient, the museum moved in 1899 to Johannisstraße 5.
This is where the museum still stands today. The collections include exhibits on archaeology, geology, city history, fine arts, crafts and folklore. Above all, objects of supra-regional importance are connected with the history of the Upper Lusatian Six Towns League and the Reformation in Upper Lusatia.
