"He who wants to build high towers must spend a long time at the foundations." ("Wer hohe Türme bauen will, muss lange beim Fundament verweilen.") (A. Bruckner)

The primary school is located at the foot of our city's symbol, the Löbauer Berg. It was built in 1981 as the first building in the new residential area of Löbau-Ost. But teaching began here much later.

In the beginning, construction workers moved in here to use the school as housing over a longer period of time. In the new district new 5- and 6-storey blocks of flats were slowly built, which were urgently needed at that time. A nursery and an even bigger school were also built. To avoid confusion, one of the schools was called "Ost I" and the present primary school was called "Ost II", later "Otto-Grotewohl-Schule". As was customary at the time, grades 1 to 10 studied in both schools under one roof.

But before the happy laughter of the children moved into the building at the foot of the Löbauer Berg, the institution had other tasks to perform. A temporary grocery shop was set up on the lower floor, where today there is a workshop, a canteen and a meeting point for pupils. Here the new tenants from Löbau-Ost could stock up on the most needed items until the department store was completed.

As there were many children on the settlement, some of the kindergarten had to move into the upper floors of the school. It was not until the final completion of the estate that schooling really took off. In 1992, a primary school for grades 1 to 4 was established, and with many new ideas and projects and numerous events, a varied school day was created for all children.

In June 2012 a beautiful balancing and climbing garden and a nice slide was opened. The Support Association and our parents have worked very hard for this.

Building work started again in autumn 2012. Windows were replaced in the school. In May 2013, the work continued: the façade was insulated and awnings were installed to protect against the sun. Since autumn 2013, the school has been shining with fresh colours and beautiful gable decoration. The gym also underwent some changes: the sanitary facilities and changing rooms were renovated. In addition, the hall was also painted and the schoolyard was redesigned.

At the beginning of the 2013-14 school year the school was renamed Grundschule "Am Löbauer Berg".

Since the 2015/16 school year we have been redesigning the school garden into a Senses Garden. As well as a hedge from which to snack, a glass composter and numerous new trees and shrubs, we are enjoying our large insect hotel.

We have held the title of 'Moving School' since 2015, incorporating a variety of physical activities into lessons and enabling outdoor sports and games.

Finally, in October 2017 we were able to inaugurate our green classroom.

In the school year 2021/22, we are embarking on the project "Prevention in a team". Our goal is that each class can say of itself: we are a "class with class" - friendly, considerate and collegial.

All these investments, conditions and projects in close cooperation with our after-school care centre, the parents' council and the support association have since supported the educational work in the school.

The primary school "Am Löbauer Berg" is part of the EU-Schulprogramms Sachsens school programme for the school year 2021|2022.

The aim of the programme is to increase the consumption and acceptance of fruit, vegetables and milk by children through regular offerings in Saxon nurseries and kindergartens as well as primary and special schools. With a free extra portion of fruit (in the case of the primary school "Am Löbauer Berg"), children should be informed about healthy eating. Educational accompanying activities, such as farm visits or thematic project days, should at the same time promote knowledge about products and their origin, as well as children's skills in handling products.

All participating institutions are regularly supplied with free products (fruit, vegetables, milk) by an approved supplier. The search for a suitable supplier as well as the on-site organisation is the responsibility of the facility. To increase the effectiveness of the programme, accompanying educational activities are to be carried out in the facilities.

You can find out more about the programme here.

Funding for the programme is provided by the European Union and the Freistaat Sachsen.

What is important to us:

We are based on results, the desire to achieve them and the sense of responsibility of all those involved.

Development of the quality of education

We understand teaching and learning as a collaborative, creative activity that prepares children for independent lifelong learning. School should be a place of shared experience. This enables the development of community skills and individual growth. Children learn to take responsibility, reflect and evaluate their own actions.

Active primary school

We plan and organise an active school day. This includes a lesson rhythm which is oriented on teaching and learning, learning styles which support all senses and offers opportunities for rest and relaxation. In this way we reduce school stress, promote the pupils' motor and perceptual skills and thus support learning.

Individual support and challenges

By changing the role of the teacher from the main actor to a consultative companion, we support the individual learning process. The teacher encourages, demonstrates learning progress and at the same time boosts their self-confidence. Accurate knowledge of current performance levels enables focused support and demands. Existing resources are used with benefit for the whole learning community.

Healthy school atmosphere

We create a rich school life which promotes the personality of the pupil and is characterised by respectful and appreciative cooperation between pupils, parents, teachers and school management. The cooperation between all participants in school life is democratic, motivating and transparent. In order to develop comprehensive competences, we rely on networked learning and teamwork among all teachers. Pupils have the opportunity to have lunch here. Children who take advantage of the all-day offer can benefit from homework supervision between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. All other children are looked after until the buses leave.
