If you are interested in classical modernism, The Schminke House by Hans Scharoun (1883-1972) is one of the four outstanding examples of the "New Building" and "International Style" styles worldwide. Today does not lack it in any architectural encyclopaedia and is mentioned in one go with:
- Villa Tugendhat - designed by German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in Brno, Czech Republic (1931),
- Villa "Savoye" - designed by Le Corbusier in Poissy near Paris, built between 1928-1930,
- Fallingwater Residence, owned by Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr. - a house designed by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1935 in south-western Pennsylvania, 70 km from Pittsburgh. The house was built over a waterfall.
All four houses have been carefully adapted to the needs of their owners and blend in impressively with the surrounding nature. Already 26 years after the final completion of the Schminke House, it was included in the list of revolutionary works of modern architecture and was finally given conservation protection in 1978. Hans Scharoun designed the house in 1930 for the Löbau noodle producer Fritz Schminke, who wanted a "modern house for two parents, four children and sometimes one or two guests". The realization was extravagant and functional at the same time. The steel skeleton construction impresses with its large glass surfaces and open structure, which gave children in particular the feeling that the house was built only for them. Scharoun used many elements from the shipbuilding industry (rounded body with terraces, external staircase and numerous round windows) in its design, which is why the building is also known as the "Noodle steamer ". In the living area, the rooms are seamlessly connected. Spacious glass surfaces include the garden as an extended living space. Besides width and transparency, the spatial experience is characterised by a variety of design elements. They have been developed especially for the house and set special accents through form and colour.
